Mooting
Mooting is a mock trial where two sides argue a point of law in front of an acting judge, who will then decide which side wins based on the presentations made.
You'll learn how to moot on our Practical Legal Skills 2 module, but you can also take part in extra-curricular mooting competitions against other universities.
Mooting is a vital skill to learn if you want to become a barrister, but it's also desirable if you'd like to work in a law firm because you'll develop legal skills of analysis and interpretation. It's also a way to practise and improve your public speaking.
Negotiation
Improve your confidence and gain access to an extended legal network through our negotiation programme.
Negotiation is a key legal skill – many legal disputes do not end up in the courts, but instead are resolved by some form of agreement. We give you an opportunity to prepare, apply and then practise your negotiation skills.
We run a competition that's sponsored by solicitors' firms who then come to 国产探花 Law School and judge the final. The top teams go on to represent the university at the national negotiation competition, which is sponsored by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution.
Client interviewing skills
Client interviewing is an important part of our course content and helps you establish a relationship with the client, learn how to identify the nature of the legal problem, and then obtain the relevant information from the client in order to reach a potential solution.
We also have an extra-curricular client interviewing programme to help you further develop the essential skill of interviewing and advising clients. Sponsored by a local law firm, the programme culminates in an internal competition and the winning students proceed to represent the university in the national Law Society competition.
Law Societies
Joining a society is a great way for our students to add to their overall experience whilst at university, providing opportunities to develop your legal knowledge and skills, network and make connections and take part in extra curricular activities.
is a thriving community run by a committee of law students. With support from the Students’ Union, it organises an exciting schedule of social and educational events.
Throughout the year, the society host various events relating to wellbeing, development and careers as well as workshops with industry professionals. Members have previously enjoyed visits to Lewes Crown Court, 国产探花 Magistrates Court and the Houses of Parliament.
Through initiatives such as these, the society provides excellent opportunities for personal development and for networking with other students interested in a career in law.
