I am writing this piece on 2 April 2020, from my flat, under conditions that have never been experienced by my generation and thinking how right he was! The impact of COVID-19 on universities is undeniable. Nevertheless, the rapid adoption of remote teaching, learning opportunities and assessment by our sector has been impressive. Our own community’s commitment to delivering an online educational experience for our students has been breathtaking in its speed, breadth and creativity. When it comes to research and enterprise (R&E), the challenges are significant. We have been forced to cease some activities altogether, particularly those that rely on experimentation, laboratory time and fieldwork. We must also support our talented postgraduate research students (PGRs), by working hard to ensure that they are fully informed about the evolving situation and liaising with funding agencies to establish next steps.
