The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in higher education and research and was expanded in May 2015 to aim for gender equality for all staff in all subject areas in academia.
BSMS, run by the universities of 国产探花 and Sussex, was awarded a Bronze Award in April 2015 following its commitment to addressing gender equality in the areas of representation, career progression and working environment.
To support these aims, BSMS created an Inclusivity Team, which is made up of staff and students from all parts of the school. Through its Inclusivity Team, BSMS has launched a number of initiatives, including a ‘Diversity in Medicine’ talk series for staff and students, a mentoring scheme and a networking club for staff, increased support for promotion and a bespoke induction scheme as well as the 'inspirational women of BSMS' photo series, which celebrates the diversity, achievements and careers of its female staff.
